How to Change the Categories of a Dimension on a Survey Query Module

In this example we will be updating the BRFSS income category dimension

  1. Make sure the new/changed variable is in the SAS data set by running a proc contents then a proc freq to look at the actual data.
  1. Load new data set onto server
    1. Make a backup of the old file. You are going to need to name the new file with the standard name, which will end up writing over the old dataset if you do not rename it first
    2. Open Winscp or other ftp tool
    3. Double click on the highlighted blue bar at the top of the right-hand side window in WinSCP3. This will bring up a new window entitled “Open Directory”
    4. Highlight /srv/ibis-q/sasData/final by clicking on it
    5. Hit OK to go to that directory
  1. Update/create the dimension file. You will need to open tomcat and go to the correct file C:\tomcat\webapps\ibisph-view\xml\query\module\brfss\dimension
  1. In this example we will be changing the income dimension from having 3 reporting categories to having 4 reporting categories:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>

<DIMENSION>
	<NAME>SurvDemoInc</NAME>
	<TITLE>Income</TITLE>
	<VALUES>
		<VALUE>1<TITLE>0-$24,999</TITLE></VALUE>
		<VALUE>2<TITLE>$25,000-$49,999</TITLE></VALUE>
		<VALUE>3<TITLE>$50,000-$74,999</TITLE></VALUE>
		<VALUE>4<TITLE>$75,000 or more</TITLE></VALUE>
		<VALUE>.<TITLE>Total</TITLE><NOT_ASSOCIATED_FLAG/></VALUE>
	</VALUES>
</DIMENSION>
  1. Save file
  2. Close
  1. Next you need to update the configuration file
    1. Open Winscp or other ftp tool
    2. Double click on the highlighted blue bar at the top of the right-hand side window in WinSCP3. This will bring up a new window entitled “Open Directory”
    3. Highlight /srv/ibis-q/modules/brfss by clicking on it
    4. Hit OK to go to that directory
    5. Open BRFSS.cgf
    6. Search for the variable you are changing, in this case incat3
    7. Change name from incat3 to the new dimension to be used, inc4
    8. Save file
    9. Close
  1. Test changes on your local machine
    1. Open tomcat by selecting Startup Tomcat on your local drive
    2. Connect to local host in a browser such as Firefox
    3. Do a test run of the data
    4. Hopefully all works fine!
  1. Deploy single page. See http://www.ibisph.org/trac/wiki/HowToPublishASinglePageForAQueryModule for instructions.
