West Nile virus (WNV) is a type of virus that can infect humans, birds, mosquitoes,
horses and some other mammals. The virus is usually spread by the bite of an infected
mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected after biting an infected bird. In a few cases, WNV
has been transmitted through blood transfusions, organ transplants, breastfeeding and from
mother to baby during pregnancy. Approximately 80 percent of people who are infected with WNV do
not have any symptoms. Of those who do show symptoms, the majority have a mild illness
referred to as West Nile Fever, which is characterized by fever, headache, aches, and sometimes
rash. In rare cases people infected with WNV develop a severe illness referred to as West Nile
neuroinvasive disease because it affects a person's nervous system. Symptoms of this severe
illness may include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, and confusion. People over age 50 are
higher risk of severe illness from WNV infection.
