Giardiasis is caused by a parasite called Giardia intestinalis (also known as
Giardia lamblia). Infection with Giardia can cause diarrhea, gas, greasy stools
that tend to float, abdominal cramps or nausea. These symptoms may lead to weight
loss and dehydration. Some people with giardiasis have no symptoms at all. Symptoms
normally begin 1 to 2 weeks after becoming infected and usually last 2 to 6 weeks.
Giardia parasites live in the intestines of infected animals and humans. Because the
parasite is protected by an outer shell, it can survive outside the body and in the
environment for long periods of time. Giardia is a common cause of waterborne disease
in the United States. Giardia can also be spread from one person to another or from an
infected animal to a person. Although anyone can get giardiasis, some groups are more
likely to become infected including diaper-aged children, international travelers,
backpackers, hikers, and campers who drink unfiltered, untreated water, and swimmers
who swallow water while swimming in lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams.
