7                Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus, is a bacteria that can cause
8                many types of invasive infections in children and adults, including pneumonia,
9                bacteremia and meningitis. Many people carry the bacteria in their throats without
10                becoming ill and it can be transmitted from person to person through respiratory
11                droplets. Streptococcus pneumoniae infections are most common during winter months.
12                Rates of infection are highest in infants, young children, the elderly, and black,
13                Alaska Native and some American Indian populations. Two vaccines are available: one
14                for use in children, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), and one for use in
15                adults, the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV). Both vaccines are very effective
16                at preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and death.
