7 | Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus, is a bacteria that can cause |
---|
8 | many types of invasive infections in children and adults, including pneumonia, |
---|
9 | bacteremia and meningitis. Many people carry the bacteria in their throats without |
---|
10 | becoming ill and it can be transmitted from person to person through respiratory |
---|
11 | droplets. Streptococcus pneumoniae infections are most common during winter months. |
---|
12 | Rates of infection are highest in infants, young children, the elderly, and black, |
---|
13 | Alaska Native and some American Indian populations. Two vaccines are available: one |
---|
14 | for use in children, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), and one for use in |
---|
15 | adults, the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV). Both vaccines are very effective |
---|
16 | at preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and death. |
