7 | Plague is an infectious disease of both animals and humans caused by the bacterium Yersinia |
---|
8 | pestis. In humans, symptoms usually appear 2 to 7 days after infection and include sudden |
---|
9 | onset of high fever, muscle aches, headache, chills and extreme weakness. The prinicpal |
---|
10 | forms of plague are bubonic, septicemic and pneumonic. Bubonic plague is characterized by |
---|
11 | the presence of an enlarged, tender lymph node, referred to as a "bubo." Septicemic and |
---|
12 | pneumonic plague progress rapidly and are usually fatal without prompt antibiotic treatment. |
---|
13 | The natural reservoir of plague is wild rodents. Human infection is usually acquired through |
---|
14 | the bites of infected rodent fleas. Plague can also be contracted by handling infected animals, |
---|
15 | especially rodents, rabbits and domestic cats, or through close contact with humans or domestic |
---|
16 | cats with pneumonic plague. |
