                Plague is an infectious disease of both animals and humans caused by the bacterium Yersinia 
                pestis. In humans, symptoms usually appear 2 to 7 days after infection and include sudden 
                onset of high fever, muscle aches, headache, chills and extreme weakness. The prinicpal 
                forms of plague are bubonic, septicemic and pneumonic. Bubonic plague is characterized by 
                the presence of an enlarged, tender lymph node, referred to as a "bubo." Septicemic and 
                pneumonic plague progress rapidly and are usually fatal without prompt antibiotic treatment. 
                The natural reservoir of plague is wild rodents. Human infection is usually acquired through 
                the bites of infected rodent fleas. Plague can also be contracted by handling infected animals, 
                especially rodents, rabbits and domestic cats, or through close contact with humans or domestic 
                cats with pneumonic plague.
