7 | Hepatitis A is an acute liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). The |
---|
8 | symptoms of hepatitis A typically begin 25 to 30 days after infection with the virus |
---|
9 | and include fever, tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea and |
---|
10 | jaundice. Adults and older children are more likely than young children to have symptoms |
---|
11 | if infected. Hepatitis A usually resolves quickly and chronic infection does not occur. |
---|
12 | HAV is found in the stool of persons with hepatitis A. Infected persons are most likely |
---|
13 | to transmit HAV in the 2 weeks before the onset of their illness. HAV is most commonly |
---|
14 | spread from one person to another, although outbreaks caused by contaminated food can occur. |
---|
15 | In 1995, hepatitis A vaccine was licensed for use in the United States and since that time |
---|
16 | the incidence of hepatitis A has fallen dramatically. |
