7 | Campylobacteriosis is caused by a group of bacteria called Campylobacter. |
---|
8 | Most people who become ill with campylobacteriosis experience diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, |
---|
9 | and fever 2 to 5 days after becoming infected with the bacteria. The diarrhea may be bloody |
---|
10 | and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The illness typically lasts 1 week and most people |
---|
11 | recover without treatment. Campylobacteriosis usually occurs in single, sporadic cases, but it |
---|
12 | can also occur in outbreaks. Most sporadic cases are associated with handling or eating raw or |
---|
13 | undercooked poultry meat. Outbreaks have been linked to the consumption of unpasteurized milk or |
---|
14 | contaminated water. |
