12        <WHY_IMPORTANT>Chromium is a naturally occurring element found in rocks and soil. It can exist in several different forms.  The metal form, chromium(0), is used for making steel. Chromium(VI) and chromium(III) are used for chrome plating, dyes and pigments, leather tanning, and wood preserving.  Chromium(III) is an essential nutrient that helps the body use sugar, protein, and fat.

14Breathing high levels of chromium(VI) can cause irritation and ulceration in the lining of the nose, and difficulty in breathing.  Skin contact with chromium(VI) compounds can cause skin ulcers and allergic skin reactions.   Chromium(VI) compounds are known human carcinogens.  In workers, inhalation of chromium(VI) has been shown to cause lung cancer.</WHY_IMPORTANT>
15        <HOW_DOING>None of the New Jersey counties exceed the health benchmark of 0.083 nanograms of chromium(VI) per cubic meter of air.</HOW_DOING>
